What is the single biggest issue that causes anxiety in teens post-divorce?
The kids won’t hate their parents or want to replace them as readily as they OCCASIONALLY (but not often) want to junk each other like last week’s garbage. Preempt your children’s concerns by assuring them that they will not soon have to cope with a stepfamily and will never have to answer to a new mom or dad. Most kids will always think more highly of each parent than the parents think of each other. Write into your agreement the timelines and limitations you will enact to prevent you from succumbing to impulse, starting a new family too soon and bringing your kids’ worst nightmare into reality. Fears in divorced kids can be overblown, and your actions have tremendous power to prove them right or wrong.
