Does the law regard some addictions as worse than others?
Of course. Cheesecake is different from cigarettes, and cigarettes are different from cocaine. The question is not what the substance is, but rather how, if at all, it impacts the children. The best interests of the child—those six words are Family Law on a sheet the size of a fortune cookie insert. Yes, some problems, whether they’re addictions or not, threaten the best interests of the child. Others clearly do not.
