What can you do if an addiction develops after you have finalized a divorce?
If you can’t make at least as mature decisions as your kids, you’re both in trouble. Having kids more mature than their parents is a recipe for disaster. You must define in an agreement what constitutes an addiction, what the treatment will be and how child custody will be temporarily or permanently affected. A male client of mine hired an escort, which he said he had stopped doing, and his kids walked in on him while he was with her. The trauma that this event caused the school-age kids, and the fact that the middle son had earlier found the dad’s pornography on the computer, brought the mom to court to revise custody, and she won.
